✨ Stars of the Unbroken: The Magical Girl Who Wouldn’t Let Go ✨
Let me take you back to 2002. I was a 7th grader with a spiral notebook, a pack of crayons, and a heart full of magical girl dreams. I didn’t know much about the world, but I knew I wanted to save it—through the eyes of a pink-haired heroine named Bunny Lilka.
She had sugar-pink hair in twin ponytails, big green eyes, and wore a turquoise halter top with sky-blue denim jeans. Bunny and her four best friends were just about to graduate high school—but not before facing one final exam: saving the entire Solar System. (As one does.)
In that first version, they battled an ancient force of destruction called Chaos, awakened by a lost soul named Lord Vinsfeld. He wasn’t some brooding anti hero with a hidden heart of gold—nah, he was just done. A purposeless wanderer who gave himself to Chaos willingly, hungry for the power to end everything. He didn’t want to rule the galaxy. He wanted to erase it.
And my girls? They weren’t having it.
I wrote 12 pages. Illustrated the margins. Colored the title page. Dreamed of transformation sequences and cosmic final attacks. Then I made a mistake I’ve never forgotten: I trusted someone who said they could “get it published.” I never saw those pages again.
Gone. Just like that.
And for 12 years, that loss haunted me. Not just because it was my first “book,” but because it was the first time I realized how vulnerable creative work really is. How easily it can disappear. But also how stubborn stories can be. Because Bunny Lilka? She never left me.
In 2004, I rewrote her for FictionPress.com.
In 2011, I self-published a rough version.
Then I took a long, painful hiatus from writing. Life happened. Confidence shattered. But Bunny still floated around the edges of my dreams like a sparkly ghost with an attitude.
Now, in 2025, she’s here. Stars of the Unbroken is real. It’s published. It’s out in the world—and this time, she’s not going anywhere.
The original title? Soldier Evolution Revolutionary Girl. You can practically smell the 90s anime influence on that one, right? That Sailor Moon x Utena energy still runs deep through this book. (Cardcaptor Sakura and Sailor Moon are spiritual big sisters to this story.)
And if you’re wondering what’s changed over the years… honestly? Not as much as you’d think.
Bunny is still bold. Still weird. Still glowing with hope and power and messy feelings. Her world has grown richer. The lore is deeper. There’s more heartbreak. More growth. And now—there’s a Star of David necklace around her neck. A quiet, sacred symbol of her connection to her power and destiny of choice, and a reminder that identity and magic are not separate things—they’re intertwined. In the original drafts, Vinsfeld impregnates her with a kiss...Soldier Evolution was the vessel to give birth to a demon that would evolve based on Bunny's heart, which he tried to fill with chaotic and dark emotions. The demon could be salvation or damnation for the Solar System.
Yeah, the lore got that dark.
The Star of David was originally a nucleus-shaped pendant to make it more science-like. I changed it to the Star of David to invoke mystery. Here's a sketch of what she looks like to my 13 year self: Not bad for A.I. generation:
I wish I could go back and rescue that original draft. I wish I could hold it and say, “It’s okay. We made it.” But in a way, that loss was a spark. It pushed me to rebuild. To keep dreaming. And to become the writer I am today.
This book is more than a story. It’s my origin.
Bunny's character
So to every writer who ever lost their first draft… to every fan who grew up on sparkles and angst… to every middle schooler who dared to believe in magic: this one’s for you.
Bunny Lilka saved my life by giving me a new one.
She’s not just the star of the story. She’s the reason I still write.
